This four-story Beacon Hill home was designed in 1821 by architect Alexander Parris, designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977 and renovated by Metric Construction in 2019 when the latest owners added a garage beneath the home’s courtyard. With the help of landscape architect Dan Gordon and renovation architects at Grassi Design Group, this peaceful and green space now serves as an extension to the classically beautiful Federal-style residence.
From the regional flora and timeless color palette that comprise the plantings of the courtyard to the top-floor roof-deck updates that include an outdoor fireplace, grill system and more, the outdoor spaces provide as much functionality as the indoor ones with this thoughtful design. The historic 1742 Martha’s Vineyard tavern, The Kelley House, is reopening in May 2023! Metric Construction along with Boston-based Blue Flag Partners have renovated the storied hotel to feature 58 rooms, a new pool, a spa, lush gardens and even an outdoor sushi restaurant.
“Ultimately, we want to create a new place on the Vineyard to inspire people well past checkout,” said Blue Flag’s Jason Brown. “After all, the best boutique hotels in the world grasp and give shape to the community in which they are built. We aspire to do just that.”

On Aug. 26, 2022 staff from the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System, staff from the Fisher House Foundation, former guests of our existing Fisher House and military families, gathered for a Topping Off Ceremony that was held on Bay Pines VA’s main campus. The ceremony was held to commemorate the progress that’s been made on the construction of a second Fisher House on the Bay Pines VA’s main campus. Please take a moment to watch this video and learn how this new Fisher House will allow us to better serve our Veterans.
In its 19th year, the Fisher House Golf Classic is the major annual fundraising event for Fisher House Foundation, raising more than $10 million to support military and veteran families. We, at Metric, are proud to support this worthy cause.

Featured in Residential Design Magazine Vol. 2, 2018 A Beacon on the Flat
Residential Design has featured our Chestnut Street Townhouse project in the magazine’s second volume, focusing on custom infill work and the importance of contextual consideration when contributing “to the existing fabric of a neighborhood.” The story captures the importance of H+A’s “do no harm” attitude when approaching the surgical procedure of building in a historic city like Boston. It also talks about the role of the Beacon Hill Architectural Commission in building the historic neighborhood’s first new home in 50 years.
In the context of H+A, it is noted that our “special talent lies in absorbing what’s lovely and worthy of preservation from our urban context and distilling those elements into handsome new architecture…working artfully and precisely.”

Check-in: No. 284, where guests are encouraged to feel at home
You could easily walk by No. 284 and not realize it’s one of Boston’s newest boutique lodgings. It is the epitome of understated elegance, a serene, luxurious oasis, steps from bustling Copley Square, that feels more like home than hotel. That is if your home happens to be a stately, six-story, 19th-century brick townhouse, filled with original art, 23 stylish rooms, and a coddling staff at your disposal. “It’s not a hotel,” owner Sandra Edgerley, president of Hexagon Properties, told us when we toured the property. “It’s a guest house, where we hope business and leisure travelers will feel at home.
